A Legacy of Excellence: Our Morningstar Performance

Recently, a client asked how often we’ve been recognized as a 4- or 5-star Morningstar performer. While we don’t have an exact count of consecutive quarters or total recognitions over the past three decades, the answer is simple: many, many times.

Our consistent performance speaks volumes. Based on rolling returns, our flagship balanced Global Income strategy has yielded the following top percentile returns in our peer group:

  •   5-Year: Top  4th percentile
  • 10-Year: Top 13th percentile
  • 15-Year: Top 15th percentile

These rankings place us among the elite in the global moderate allocation category for U.S. investment managers. Although Morningstar doesn’t track 20-year performance against peers, our long-term results remain strong and competitive.

What Do Morningstar Ratings Mean?

Morningstar uses a proprietary Risk-Adjusted Return formula that emphasizes downside risk and rewards consistency. Star ratings are percentile-based:

  • Top 10%  =   ★★★★★
  • Next 22.5% = ★★★★

Time-Weighted Ratings

Morningstar calculates ratings for threefive, and ten-year periods. The Overall Rating is a weighted average of these:

Strategy Track Record | Weighting based on length of track record

  • 36–59 months: 100% based on 3-year rating
  • 60–119 months: 60% 5-year / 40% 3-year
  • 120+ months: 50% 10-year / 30% 5-year / 20% 3-year

We’re proud of our enduring track record and the value we’ve delivered to clients over the years. However, it’s not just about beating benchmarks—more importantly, it’s about helping our clients achieve their personal goals, like a comfortable retirement. As we say on our website: “Our benchmark is the long-term success of our clients.”

Why We Stand Apart

It’s worth noting that 98–99% of wealth managers—including banks, insurance agents, brokers, and Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs)—are not asset managers. They typically allocate investments to firms like ours or purchase ETFs (including the one we sell to them), adding extra layers of cost. Unlike the great majority of our wealth management (financial advisor) competitors, we are GIPS-compliant (Global Investment Performance Standards), meaning we adhere to rigorous standards for performance reporting. Most financial advisors and wealth managers cannot display their performance.

We don’t just aim to outperform an index—we aim to outperform expectations and to get our clients to-and through-retirement.

We appreciate the trust our clients and investors have placed with us over almost three decades and look forward to continuing to service your wealth management needs as well as provide sound risk adjusted returns for the decades to come.

Morningstar rankings are based on total return within each respective category and are subject to change. Rankings shown in this post are as of 6/30/2025. The Morningstar Rating™ for separately managed accounts, commonly called the “star rating,” is calculated for SMA composites based on a risk-adjusted return measure. Morningstar ranks SMA strategies within peer categories over various time periods (1-,3-,5-, and 10-years) and assigns star ratings accordingly. Rankings reflect a strategy’s standing relative to its category peers at the time of publication. The Morningstar Rating™ is derived from a weighted average of the performance figures associated with a strategy’s three-, five-, and ten-year (if applicable) risk-adjusted returns. Rankings and ratings are as of June 30, 2025, and are subject to change monthly. Only SMA strategies with at least three years of performance history and adequate asset coverage are eligible to receive a Morningstar Rating. The Morningstar Rating does not reflect any fees an investor may pay, including platform fees, manager fees, or transaction costs, and does not constitute an offer or solicitation to buy or sell any securities.
